Cookie Notice

Last updated: Version 1.2: First final edition, shared by all CRCGS platforms.

This notice lists every cookie the CRCGS platforms set. We use no advertising, analytics or tracking cookies, and we load nothing from other companies' servers that could set them.

1. What cookies are

A cookie is a very small text file that a website asks your browser to keep. It lets the site remember something between pages or visits, such as that you are signed in. A cookie belongs to the website that set it, so a cookie from one CRCGS platform is not seen by another: each platform has its own, and the notice below is shown once on each.

2. The cookies we set

Every cookie below is a first-party cookie, set by the platform you are visiting. "Secure" means the browser sends it only over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection; "HttpOnly" means scripts on the page cannot read it; "SameSite=Lax" means it is not sent with requests started from other websites, apart from when you click a link to us.

mtrCountry ProfilesCounts, without knowing who you are, how many detail pages you open in a calendar month before you create an account; it holds a month, a count and short fingerprints of the pages (signed so it cannot be altered). The sign-in cookie is set only when you open the sign-in, account or admin pages, or if you already have it. Most pages set no cookie at all; the free-reading cookies are set when you open a detail page on Country Profiles, and the notice cookie only when you press OK.

3. The free-reading limit (Country Profiles)

Country Profiles lets you read a few detail pages a month before it asks you to create a free account. The two cookies that do this, "mtr" and "mtrs", hold only a month, a count and short fingerprints of page addresses; they do not identify you, are not shared and are not used to follow you around other sites. Signed-in readers and search-engine crawlers are not counted. Because these cookies run a feature of the site rather than something you asked for by name, we describe them plainly here; blocking them does not stop you reading.

4. What we do not use

  • No advertising cookies and no advertising networks.
  • No analytics or statistics services, and no tracking pixels.
  • No social-media buttons or embedded videos that set their own cookies.
  • No fonts, scripts or images loaded from other companies.

5. The cookie notice on the pages

When you first visit a platform with scripts enabled, a short notice appears at the bottom of the page with an OK button and a link to this page. It does not block the page and offers no choices, because there are no optional cookies to switch on or off. Pressing OK sets one cookie, "ck_notice", for 365 days, so the notice does not return.

If your browser has scripts turned off, the notice is simply not shown, and "ck_notice" is never set. The platforms work the same.

6. How to delete or block cookies

You can see, delete and block cookies in your browser's settings (usually under Privacy or Site data). Deleting the sign-in cookie signs you out. Deleting "ck_notice" shows the notice again. Blocking all cookies means you cannot sign in; reading public pages still works.

7. Changes to this notice

If we ever add a cookie that is not listed here, we will update this notice first and ask for your consent where the law requires it. The date at the top shows the last change.
