Compliance Training and Awareness
Subject: Compliance and Regulation, Compliance Programme and Function
Compliance training and awareness cover the courses, briefings and reminders that teach staff which rules apply to their work, how to apply them and how to report concerns.
Explanation
Training is formal and tracked: induction courses, annual refreshers, role-specific modules and tests. Awareness is lighter and continuous, such as posters, newsletters, short videos and manager talks that keep the subject in view between courses. Content is based on the compliance risk assessment, so a procurement team learns about bribery and conflicts while a sales team learns about advertising and mis-selling. Good design uses real scenarios, short sessions and a pass mark. Records of who was trained and when are kept because regulators often ask for them. Completion rates alone prove little, so firms also test understanding. Senior staff and board members receive training too, since their decisions carry the most risk. Training files that list only attendance draw questions from inspectors, who expect test results and evidence of fewer repeat errors.
Example
A telecoms firm sees that most of its data-protection complaints come from call-centre agents. It replaces its annual slide deck with a 20-minute course using six recorded call scenarios, adds a pass mark of 80% and sends monthly reminders. Complaints from that team fall by about a third over the next year.
