Foreign Financial Institution (FFI)

An FFI is any non-U.S. financial institution?like banks, custodians, investment funds, or insurance companies?that holds financial assets for others, accepts deposits, or invests. Under FATCA, FFIs must register with the IRS, identify and report U.S. account holders, or face a 30% withholding tax to prevent offshore tax evasion.
