Ethics Hotline
Subject: Governance, Ethics and Conduct
Also known as: Ethics Helpline, Speak-Up Line
An ethics hotline is a confidential channel, by phone, web form or app, through which employees and others can report suspected misconduct or ask for guidance, often anonymously and often run by an outside provider.
Explanation
Staff may be reluctant to go to a line manager, especially when the manager is the problem. A hotline gives them another route. Calls and messages are logged by an independent service or an internal team, given a case number and passed to a small group such as compliance, HR or internal audit for triage. Reporters can usually follow up using the case number without revealing who they are. Typical reports concern fraud, harassment, bribery, safety and misuse of data. The line works only if people trust it, so organisations publicise it, promise no retaliation and report back on outcomes. Usage figures, such as reports per thousand employees, hint at how far people feel able to speak. Some laws and listing rules require a channel of this kind.
Example
A contractor at a logistics firm submits a web report that a depot manager is taking cash to give certain drivers extra shifts. The hotline provider logs it, removes identifying details and sends it to internal audit. Audit confirms the payments from bank records, the manager is dismissed and the contractor receives a case update.
